Diontae Johnson should have been a first-round pick in all dynasty formats the moment he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The track record of the Steelers when it comes to wide receivers is well documented so it’s no surprise Diontae Johnson went from a 3rd round pick in most 2019 dynasty rookie drafts to a coveted asset that STILL might be undervalued at his current price. His stats and film both show the story of a player that is thriving with a defined role on one of the best teams in the league… and he’s just getting started.
So what makes Diontae Johnson special? It begins with his route running. Coming out of Toledo, Johnson’s route running was well documented. His ability to create separation off the line of scrimmage is evident on most of his targets. Not only that, but he makes plays in the open space. This is especially helpful because, at this stage of his career, Big Ben has transitioned from a gunslinger to a more conservative gameplan.
JuJu Smith-Schuster has helped Diontae Johnson by drawing the team’s best coverage away from Johnson. This obviously allows Johnson to thrive against the weaker competition on the outside and occasionally in the slot to create YAC. The Steelers are still passing the ball as much as ever (41.5 attempts per game) and his 22.9% target share isn’t going down anytime soon.

His 106 targets rank 8th in the entire league and there’s no sign of the Steelers slowing down their passing game anytime soon. Keep in mind, Diontae Johnson has had a case of the dropsies and still manages to put up WR1 numbers whenever he isn’t injured. He has been one of the most consistent wide receivers in the league when healthy and is on a top team heading into December with every incentive to use him as much as possible.
With matchups against Buffalo, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis over the next three weeks, Diontae Johnson has a chance to prove himself as a Top-15 wide receiver in dynasty leagues l and a league-winner for managers in 2020.
